History of the Brunel’s SS Great Britain

Considered as one of the most important ships in the world, Brunel’s SS Great Britain launched in 1843 as the greatest experiment since the Creation, making history from the get go! Fitted with the most powerful jet and a screw propeller, this was the newest invention in maritime technology. In 1852, the ship set sail for the first time to Australia.

The long working life of the Brunel’s SS Great Britain came to an end in 1933. Ewan Corlett was the architect who salvaged the ship in 1970. Rescued alongside an expert salvage team, it travelled over 8,000 miles via a huge floating pontoon pulled by tugs, back to its birth place of Bristol.

The Kirby Laing Room is ideal for workshops, drink receptions and presentations for up to 25 delegates and is perfectly located in the heart of the Brunel Institute. And if you’re looking for outstanding views, the promenade deck situated on the ship is perfect for gala dinners.

If you’re looking to add dining onto your event, the Brunel SS Great Britain offer freshly cooked food on board. Served to guests in the First Class Dining Saloon, a tasty meal will be a great addition to your event. The steward and his team are passionate about the quality of food and drinks and are more than happy to meet specific needs and requirements.

In summer, there is even the option to admire the sunset over the harbour with a BBQ and Pimms.
