In an era of heightened environmental awareness, the hospitality industry is undergoing a remarkable shift in practices towards a greener, more sustainable future. In this blog, we shine a spotlight on several remarkable venues that have made it their mission to introduce sustainability into everything they do, setting ambitious green targets and achieving them with dedication, innovation and passion.
The Woodlands Event Centre at Wyboston Lakes
Wyboston Lakes Resort is committed to contributing to a more sustainable future for all. To achieve this, the
resort’s dedicated Green Team is working diligently towards the goal of achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2040.
Due to their current work, Wyboston Lakes Resort has earned several prestigious achievements, including gold awards from the Green Tourism Awards and the IACC, as well as the EcoSmart Platinum Venue Award from Greengage Solutions. Most recently, they were honoured with the 2023 Sustainability Award at the Conference & Events Awards.
Their commitment to sustainability is evident through initiatives such as planting over 26,500 trees, installing 30 EV charging points, transitioning to state-of-the-art LED lighting, and reducing their reliance on single-use plastics. Wyboston Lakes Resort continues to make significant strides towards achieving their ambitious sustainability targets.
Whittlebury Park
Whittlebury Park believes that everyone has a duty of care for the environment and to seek ways to conserve natural resources. In recent years, the venue has successfully implemented various environmental measures and practices, all while ensuring that the comfort, standards, and enjoyment of guests remain uncompromised.
Across its 700 acres, four nature reserves have been created and over 25,000 new trees have been planted. The venue takes pride in being a zero-to-landfill estate, recycling everything from glass, paper, waste cooking oils, and even food waste, which is converted into biofuel to heat the spa’s hydrotherapy pool.
Water efficiency is also an effective way of protecting human health and the environment. That’s why Whittlebury Park has implemented water conservation measures to reduce consumption and costs by installing water-saving devices sensor flushing systems, measuring swimming pool clarity, and harvesting rainwater.
Best Western The Dartmouth Hotel, Golf and Spa
Best Western The Dartmouth Hotel, Golf and Spa participates in the Green Tourism Programme. A programme that measures the property’s impact on the environment, the community, cultural heritage and the local economy. The venue has implemented several sustainable practices, demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility, all while ensuring the comfort of its guests and delegates.
The Dartmouth Hotel no longer use any single-use plastic toiletries and wall-mounted, refillable dispensers have been installed across the venue. The on-site self-catering cottages have ground source heat pumps and daily housekeeping will only be provided on request. By opting out of daily housekeeping, water, energy, and the use of detergents are minimised.
Within the 225 acres of rolling South Hams countryside, The Dartmouth Hotel has built a solar panel farm and recently created a new reed bed which offers a natural, eco-friendly system for wastewater treatment whilst providing a suitable habitat for wildfowl.
