For Sales Manager Charlie Huskins, the job has never really been about targets; it’s about people. Since joining Marwell Hotel last year, Charlie has been the driving force behind the hotel’s corporate relationships, working to connect local businesses, event organisers and guests with what this South Downs retreat does best. Read on to find out about a day in the life of Charlie and learn more about her role and everything at Marwell Hotel.
How long have you worked at Marwell Hotel?
I recently celebrated my one-year anniversary! It’s been an exciting journey, and I’ve loved being part of all the developments over the past 12 months.
What does your job involve?
Being a Sales Manager is about more than just numbers and targets; it’s about people. From check-in to ordering that well-needed refreshment at the bar to housekeeping delivering fresh towels to the room, the entire hotel plays a part in building meaningful relationships. At its core, my role is all about connections – bringing together local businesses, the community, colleagues, and guests, and sharing the unique experience of the Marwell Hotel.

What’s a challenging part of your job?
Sales is always evolving, and staying ahead of that pace can be a challenge, but it pushes me to keep learning, adapting, and finding new ways to connect.
What’s been the best advice given to you?
It really is simple… Be yourself. It’s a phrase we all know, but one I genuinely stand by: “People buy people”
What’s the best part of your job? And least favourite?
I love creativity, now I’m certainly not the next great artist, but I really enjoy building packages, developing
events, and collaborating with our partners to bring ideas to life. Where there’s a will, there’s always a way!
The less glamorous side is the admin work, but I see it as the foundation that keeps everything organised and allows the creative, people-focused work to shine.

What’s your favourite dish on the menu?
It has to be our Grilled Chimichurri Chicken… Who doesn’t love marinated chicken and herb-roasted potatoes? My favourite!
What catering options are available?
We’ve upgraded the classic sandwich platter into a Toastie Bar – no more standard sandwiches, just a full spread where you get to choose everything! Alongside this, we offer hot & cold buffets, BBQ lunches (best
enjoyed on our summer patio), and for something lighter, we can create a bespoke healthy menu just for you.

What’s your favourite meeting room?
Oh, this has to be our Oakwood Room, floor-to ceiling windows make you feel like you’re right out in the trees, full of natural light, and it even comes with its own bar. Let’s just say, with a setup like this, no one’s straying too far from the dancefloor!
What’s been your most memorable event?
We opened our Oakwood and Maplethorpe spaces, connected by our patio and woodlands, to host a packed wellness day. Think yoga, sound baths, amazing speakers… then add outdoor portable saunas and ice baths!
A team of 150 embraced the January weather and got stuck into the outdoor experiences.

What can a 24hr delegate do in their downtime?
In the lighter summer months, you can enjoy beautiful bridal paths around the hotel, taking you past the zoo and through to the charming village of Owslebury. Head back to relax with a book from our swap shelf or enjoy a drink in the sun and a meal in our on-site restaurant. We are also close to Winchester City for a dose of local history, and a nearby golf course offers visitor passes for keen golfers too.
What do you do in your downtime?
I love a good walk, sometimes even a light jog, and there’s one route just under 10 minutes from the hotel that’s a favourite. Start at Hockley Viaduct, follow the path up to St Catherine’s Hill, and take in incredible views
over Winchester. Even better, there’s a great café waiting at the top, and if you carry on a little further, you’ll find yourself right in the city centre.

Why should an event organiser pick Marwell Hotel?
Set within the South Downs National Park, we bring nature into every experience. Our unique lodge-style hotel is built around a slow philosophy – where glass walkways immerse you in woodland views, and even stepping into your room comes with the sound of birdsong. It’s a space where guests can truly switch off and leave the day’s worries behind.
